Charles Church Camberley Band

Frimley based Charles Church Camberley Band began their 50th anniversary celebration in style last week with a visit to the traditional Whit Friday marches in the Saddleworth and Oldham region, near Manchester.

24 band members aged between 14 to 70 joined over 100 other brass bands who gathered to take part in the annual Whit Friday marches, including some the very best in Europe. Bands playing this year included Brighouse & Rastrick, Dinnington Colliery (recently featured on the BBC2 series Band for Britain) and Norwegian based Stavanger Band.

The band visited a number of contests in local villages marching down the street before playing a march to a professional adjudicator who scored them in relation to other competing bands, based on their musicality.

This was the very first visit to these contests for most band members and they started at Stalybridge Celtic football club mid afternoon and finished at the iconic Delph (made famous in the hit film Brassed Off) late evening. The band also contested at Friezland, Uppermill, Diggle, Dobcross and Carrbrook during the evening.

Robert Cherry, the bandʼs musical director said This was a fantastic opportunity for Charles Church Camberley Band to get out on the road and experience playing to thousands of people. The band has made great progress over the last few months and we really enjoyed the fantastic crowds, electric atmosphere and the chance to meet up with old friends in the brass banding community.

The good news is that you donʼt have to travel all the way to Manchester to hear CCCB perform – theyʼll be playing across the region this summer including Fleet Hospital Fete on 12th June and at Newbury bandstand on 27th June. Please see the website for further details: www.camberleyband.co.uk
